PURPOSE:To enhance sensitivity and practicality for use in high-speed recording, by jointly using a specified nitro compound with a leuco dye and a color developer. CONSTITUTION:A nitro compound of the general formula, wherein R is an alkyl, substd. or unsubstd. aryl or aralkyl is jointly used, in a thermal recording material utilizing a color forming reaction between a leuco dye and a color developer. At least one leuco dye is used either singly or in combination, whereas an electron-acceptive compound is used as the color developer. A coating liquid for forming a thermal recording layer prepared by mixing the components is applied to a base such as a paper, a synthetic paper and a plastic film, followed by drying. The amounts of the leuco dye, the color developer and the color formation sensitizer used are respectively 5-40wt.%, 20-60wt.% and 20-60wt.%.
