Abstract

PURPOSE:To inspect the cracking of piping with good accuracy, by providing a cylinder apparatus allowing a support and an ultrasonic probe to advance and retract with respect to the inner wall of a pipe and a couplant supply member for supplying a couplant to the cylinder apparatus. CONSTITUTION:The whole of an apparatus is pushed in piping 1 up to an inspection position by a push-in rod 26 and a couplant is fed to a cylinder apparatus 11 through piping 20 to press a support 6 to the inner wall surface of the piping under predetermined pressure. By this method, the whole of the apparatus is held at that position. At the same time, a probe holder 13 is also moved toward the inner wall of the piping and the ultrasonic probe 7 is pressed to the inner wall of the piping to be brought into contact therewith but, when the pressing force thereof is too strong, the couplant is supplied to the cylinder part 14 from a piping 21 to reduce the contact pressure of the probe to prevent the damage of the probe 7. By this method, thickness reduction or cracking of the piping due to an ultrasonic wave can be detected within an error range of + or -0.5mm with good accuracy.
