Abstract

PURPOSE:To simplify a structure by constructing a sensor head of a light input/ output surface facing a light source and a photodetector and of an optical prism provided with two reflection planes and by using one of the reflection plane as a measuring element. CONSTITUTION:A sensor head 1 is provided with a light input/output plane 1a facing a light source 2 and a photodetector 3 through a optical fibers 4 and 5 respectively and with two reflection planes 1b and 1c, and the reflection planes 1b and 1c are so constructed that they are spherical and that one reflection plane 1b contacts a sample X while the other reflection plane 1c makes total internal reflection. A light emitted from the light source 2 enters the sensor head 1, i.e. an optical prism, through the optical fiber 4, and a reflection loss corresponding to the refractive index and concentration of a sample X (solution to be measured) occurs on the reflection plane 1b contacting the sample X. Then, the light is reflected on the reflection plane 1c, enters the optical fiber 5 and is taken in by the photodetector 3 through the optical fiber 5. An electric signal outputted from the detector 3 is supplied to a processor 9, and a value of refractive index corresponding to the intensity of the detection signal is displayed in a display 11.
