Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:A 4-alkenyloxy-4'-fluorobiphenyl expressed by formula I (R is 3-15C straight-chain or branched alkenyl having double bond). EXAMPLE:4-Allyloxy-4'-fluorobiphenyl. USE:A low-viscosity liquid crystal composition, having a low threshold voltage as compared with DELTAn and excellent compatibility with many other liquid crystal compounds and capable of exhibiting smectic liquid crystal phase at about ambient temperature. PREPARATION:For example, 4-fluoro-4-hydroxybiphenyl expressed by formula II is reacted with potassium hydroxide in ethanol by adding an alkenyl bromide to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
