PURPOSE:To obtain a high-reliability multi-stage-stacked gapless lightning arrester with less components and a small-sized insulating tube by providing an element containing more gamma type bismuth oxide at the high-voltage terminal side as compared with the low-voltage terminal side in a multi-stage-stacked voltage nonlinear resistor element group. CONSTITUTION:An element containing more gamma type bismuth oxide is provided at the high-voltage terminal side in a voltage nonlinear resistor element 51 group mainly made of multi-stage-stacked zinc oxide. The element containing more gamma type bismuth oxide is obtained by diffusing the bismuth oxide from one or both of upper and lower end faces of a sintered body 41 mainly made of zinc oxide then forming an electrode on this end face, for example. The gammatype bismuth oxide phase generated in the sintered body when the bismuth oxide is diffused has an effect to improve the stability of the voltage nonlinear resistor 51 for the long-term charging. A multi-stage-stacked gapless lightning arrester satisfying the life characteristic and having less or smaller components than before can be thereby obtained.
