Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the machinability and mechanical strength of glassy ceramics by blending starting materials such as pottery stone and Mg fluoride to prepare a blend contg. prescribed amts. of Si, Al, K, Mg, Zr, etc., melting the blend by heating and forming the molten blend into a glass body under prescribed conditions. CONSTITUTION:Compds. capable of separately forming Mg oxide, potassium oxide and boron oxide, pottery stone and Mg fluoride are blended with a composite oxide consisting of one or more kinds of metal oxides selected among oxides of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and lead and Zr dioxide to prepare a blend contg. 16-25pts.wt. Si basing on 100pts.wt. blend, 6-9pts.wt. Al, 5.5-12 pts.wt. K, 4.7-15pts.wt. Mg, etc. The blend is melted and the molten blend is slowly cooled at <=100 deg.C/hr cooling rate in the temp. range from the glass transition temp. +50 deg.C to the glass transition temp. -70 deg.C. The resulting glass body is heat treated at 1100-1360 deg.C.
