Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the fatigue strength of parts, by applying shot peening to steel parts in which the depth of a slack quenched surface layer is regulated practically to a specific value or below while increasing shot hardness and shot grain-projecting speed to values within specific ranges, respectively. CONSTITUTION:Shot peening is applied to steel parts in which the depth of a slack quenched surface layer (slack quenched layer attendant on intergranular oxidation) is regulated to <=about 15mu, under the conditions of HRC50-58 shot hardness and 60-120m/sec shot grain-projecting speed. As to the method for controlling the depth of the slack quenched surface layer to <=about 15mu, for example, a carbonitriding method in which the hardening of a surface layer is improved by adding trace amounts of nitrogen to a surface and a method in which the hardenability of material is improved by adding alloying elements by the amounts larger than those added in the case of the ordinary steel for carbonitriding (SCr420, etc.) are cited, or further, a method in which the internal oxidation of Cr and Mn causing the formation of a slack quenched surface layer is inhibited by shortening carburizing time as compared with that in the ordinary case, a method in which vacuum carburizing is applied, etc., are cited.
