Abstract

PURPOSE:To accomplish the titled elimination in high efficiency by adding a specific acrylonitrile eliminator to acrylonitrile-contg. water or aqueous dispersion to convert the free acrylonitrile into another substance. CONSTITUTION:Generally, 1-6 moles per mole of acrylonitrile, of (A) a sulfoxylate (e.g. alkali metal salt, alkaline earth metal salt, ammonium salt of H2SO2) or (B) an aldehyde derivative therefrom (e.g. formaldehyde sodium sulfoxylate dihydrate, formaldehyde zinc sulfoxylate) or (C) a dithionite (e.g. sodium salt of H2S2O4) is added to acrylonitrile-contg. water or aqueous dispersion followed by treatment at 0-95 deg.C for 30min. to 6hrs., thus eliminating the acrylonitrile present. This elimination process is in particular useful as a reduction procedure for the free acrylonitrile present in a latex of copolymer containing acrylonitrile as a constitutent.
