Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for perfumery, etc., in high yield and optical purity under mild reaction condition, by treating (R)-(+)-gamma-butyrolactone-gamma-3-propionic acid t-butyl ester with formic acid. CONSTITUTION:The objective (R)-(+)-gamma-butyrolactone-gamma-3-propionic acid of formula II useful as an intermediate for gamma-jasmolactone (perfumery), insect pheromone (e.g. eldanolide or 4-hexanolide) or steganodone (a drug for leukemia) can be produced from an easily synthesizable raw material, at a low cost, by hydrolyzing (R)-(+)-gamma-butyrolactone-gamma-3-propionic acid t-butyl ester of formula I (t-But is t-butyl) with formic acid.
