Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover high-purity resorcinol from aqueous phase in high yield, by carrying out oxidation and acid decomposition of m-diisopropylbenzene, introducing the resultant reaction mixture into a middle stage of an acetone-removing distillation column, extracting a liquid from a specific position between the middle stage and the column, bottom, separating the liquid into oil and aqueous phase and separating the objective resorcinol from the aqueous phase.
CONSTITUTION: m-Diisopropylbenzene is oxidized with 02, the obtained oxidation product containing m-diisopropylbenzene hydroperoxide is subjected to acid decomposition with an acid catalyst in the presence of a water-insoluble solvent and resorcinol is recovered from the acid decomposition mixture. In the above process, the acid decomposition mixture is supplied to a middle stage (stage A) of an acetone-removing distillation column and the liquid in the column is extracted from the extraction stage (stage B) between the stage A and the column bottom. The liquid at the stage B has an acetone content of ≤20wt.% and a water-concentration of ≥5wt.%. The liquid extracted from the column to external oil-water separation tank is separated into oil and water and resorcinol is recovered from the obtained aqueous phase. The oily phase left after the removal of resorcinol is used as a still residue, from which a valuable substance can be recovered by thermal decomposition.
