Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase chemical resistance and reliability of optical fiber by adding ZrO2 or other compounds at least to the peripheral part of the clad in an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:In a quartz optical fiber which is composed of the core of a high refractive index and the clad of a low refractive index, at least one selected from ZrO2, SnO2, La2O3, tiO2, B2O3, Al2O3, PbO and ZnO is added to at least the outer periphery of the clad. The addition of these oxides realizes optical fibers resisting to staying water containing chemicals in manholes to prolong the cable life.
