Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the occurrence of failure in ignition due to excessive exhaust gas reflux (EGR) during lean running having a low EGR limit, by a method wherein, during transient running of an engine, an EGR amount is controlled based on a correction amount, responding to an air-fuel ratio., and a fundamental amount. CONSTITUTION:Exhaust gas is returned to the suction system of an engine (b) by means of an exhaust gas reflux device (d). In this case, a fundamental amount of the exhaust gas reflux device (a) is decided by a fundamental control amount deciding means (c). A transient running time of the engine (b) is decided by a transition deciding means (d). During transient running of the engine (b), a transient correction amount responding to an air fuel ratio (e) is decided by a transient correction amount deciding means (f). Based on a fundamental amount and a transient correction amount, a final control amount is decided by a control signal generating means (h) to generate a control signal, and the exhaust gas reflux device (a) is driven. Namely, during transient running, e.g. acceleration and deceleration of the engine (b), exhaust gas return is effected by means of a control signal responding to an air-fuel ratio.
