Abstract

PURPOSE:To efficiently prepare the title polymer having excellent heat resistance and mechanical strength, by reacting a dihalobenzonitrile with a dihydroxyaryl compd. in the presence of a specific catalyst, an alkali metal compd. and an aprotic solvent. CONSTITUTION:A dihalobenzonitrile (A) formula I (wherein X and Y are each halogen) is reacted with a dihydroxyaryl compd. (B) of formula II or III (wherein R<1-2> is H or 1-4C alkyl; and n and m are each 1-4) in an aprotic solvent prepd. by mixing a solvent capable of forming an azeotropic mixture with water (e.g., benzene) with an aprotic polar solvent (e.g., dimethyl sulfoxide) at a wt. ratio of 1:10-1:1 in the presence of 0.01-10wt.%, based on the component A, of a catalyst tertiary amine (e.g., triethylamine) and an alkali metal compd. (e.g., Na2CO3) at 80-200 deg.C to prepare an oligomer, which is then heated at 200-300 deg.C to effect condensation polymerization thereof to thereby prepare a polycyanoaryl ether having a reduced viscosity of a least 0.3dl/g and recurring units of formula IV (wherein Ar is arylene).
