Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain chlorine apatite of high purity, highly reactive with carbon dioxide, by reaction of apatite hydroxide with ammonium chloride in an alkaline aqueous medium. CONSTITUTION:The objective chlorine apatite can be obtained by reaction of apatite hydroxide with ammonium chloride in an alkaline aqueous solution. The apatite hydroxide can be prepared, as precipitate, by adding to lime milk (formed by suspending calcium hydroxide in water) followed by bringing the system to a pH of ca. 9.2. The addition of phosphoric acid is preferably such that the aqueous solution of higher concentration be used at the initial stage, while that of lower concentration at the final stage, thus making the pH adjustment of the reaction mixture easier. Therefore, as the apatite hydroxide, a reaction product from calcium hydroxide and phosphoric acid can be used.
