Abstract
PURPOSE:To ensure the quick judgement to avoid the obstacles for a self- traveling vehicle by setting an obstacle area zone including obstacles along one of both edges of a traveling path of the vehicle and carrying out the arithmetic processing with notice taken only to a virtual traveling path excluding the obstacle area zone. CONSTITUTION:The obstacles existing on a traveling path 12 are detected based on the picture information given from an image pickup means attached to a self-traveling vehicle 11. Thus an obstacle B1 nearest the vehicle 11 is recognized. An auxiliary line l1 is set in parallel with an edges S1 of the linear path 12 and with a contact secured with the obstacle B1. The area set between the line l1 and the edge S1 is defined as an obstacle area zone. Then the area set by excluding the obstacle area zone out of the path 12 is defined as a virtual traveling path. The passing possibility is judged for the vehicle 11 based on said virtual traveling path.
