Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a polymer having remarkably decreased amount of residual monomer and useful as a flocculant for water-treatment, additive for drilling mud for oil digging, water-retainer, etc., by contacting a water-containing gelatinous polymer with a steam-containing gas, thereby drying the polymer. CONSTITUTION:A water-containing gelatinous polymer [e.g. a polymer produced by polymerizing a monomer component containing >=10wt.% of one or more monomers such as (meth)acrylic acid, acrylamide or acrylonitrile] is made to contact with a gas containing at least steam and having a dew point of 50-100 deg.C (e.g. a mixture of steam and air or a mixture of steam and an inert gas) at 80-250 deg.C, preferably 100-180 deg.C and dried until the solid content of the polymer reaches >=60wt.%, especially >=90wt.%. The hydrophilic polymer produced by the process is free from adverse effect against human body and environment, etc.
