Abstract
PURPOSE: To treat an unreacted component without damaging the quality of the titled emulsion, by discharging an excess ethylene in the system after emulsion polymerization, adding an anti-foaming agent and a catalyst to it, introducing a water-containing inert gas to a gas phase in a container.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene, vinyl acetate, and, if necessary, a copolymerizable monomer (e.g., acrylglycidyl, etc.) is subjected to emulsion polymerization in an aqueous medium. After the reaction is over, an excess ethylene in the reaction system is discharged, the reaction system is made at atmospheric pressure, and (A) an anti-foaming agent and (B) a catalyst (e.g., a redox catalyst consisting of a binitrate, hydrogen peroxide, etc.) is added to the reaction system, so that unreacted vinyl acetate in the emulsion is further copolymerized. Finally, (C) an inert gas with a water content of 1W25vol% is introduced to a gas phase in the container so that the dissolving ethylene is discharged, to give the desired emulsion having ≤0.3wt% remaining vinyl acetate and ≤100ppm dissolving ethylene.
