Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out printing on such a rigid base material as to be unbendable or a semi-rigid base material by selectively activating print elements during the movement of a print head and accurately holding the base material at the right position within the printing area. CONSTITUTION: A ribbon 1 is moved discontinuously or step by step to the direction of an arrow 20 and a base material, an arrow 21. When a label is moved by the base material, the transfer of the base material 5 is instantaneously stopped and a solenoid 22 is energized, and a clamp chassis 15 is moved up to the position where said chassis is clamped. A print head carriage is energized to move the print head and holds a number of heating elements 23 across the ribbon and the surface of the base material 5 in a row to continuously print net points on a label. A print head is moved until the required symbols are printed on the label and the print elements are selectively energized during printing to establish the required symbols. After the label printing is complete, the chassis 15 is immediately moved down and the ribbon 1 and the base 5 are moved at certain distance until the subsequent label on the base material reaches the lower section of the print head which operation is repeated.
