Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the variance in the depth of the carbonitrided layer of a material to be treated by forming a heater with a tubular body pierced with plural gas blow-off ports through its tube wall, and arranging the plural heaters to surround the material to be treated. CONSTITUTION:The heater 11 is formed with the tubular body with both ends closed, plural gas blow-off ports 13 directed toward the center of the furnace shell 1 are bored through the tube wall, and the plural heaters are arranged to surround the material 5 to be treated. Under such a constitution, the material 5 is placed on a hearth 6, the inside of the furnace is evacuated to a specified vacuum, the heater 11 is energized by an electric power source 12, and the material 5 is heated. A processing gas is supplied into the heater 11 from a supply source 15, and then supplied into the furnace from the blow-off port 13. A glow discharge is generated between an anode 2 and the material 5, and sputtering is carried out. The space for the material to be treated can be enlarged in this way, the variance in the depth of the carbonitrided layer of the material 5 is reduced, and the time for temp. raising can also be shortened.
