Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve safety and handleability when diamond is synthesized by a vapor phase method, by using an org. compd. and steam as starting materials without using hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:When diamond is synthesized by a vapor phase method, an org. compd. and steam are used as starting materials for synthesizing diamond without using hydrogen. The org. compd. is preferably methanol or ethanol and vapor of the org. compd. is mixed with steam in 1:about 0.0005-10, preferably 1:about 0.01-3 volume ratio. In the case where a hot filament method is adopted, the temp. of a filament is regulated to about 1,500-2,800 deg.C and synthesis is carried out under about 0.01-1,000Torr pressure. Diamond having a clear shape and high crystallinity is deposited under moderated conditions.
