Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain 2-chloropropionic acid which is useful as an industrial chemicals, under reduced corrosion conditions, practically in high selectivity, by effecting liquid-phase oxidation of 2-chloropeopion aldehyde with oxygen gas using an alkali metal-containing compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:2-Chloropropionaldehyde of formula I is oxidized in liquid phase, preferably in a solvent such as 2-chloropropionic acid, preferably in a concentration of 5-15wt.% in the presence of an alkali metal-containing compound catalyst such as sodium 2-chloropropionate using O2 or an O2-containing gas, preferably at 40-90 deg.C, preferably at O2 partial pressure of 5-100kg/cm<2> to give 2-chloropropionic acid of formula II, which is useful as a synthetic intermediate of agrochemicals. As the above-stated alkali metal-containing compound, are preferably used acetates or 2-chloropropionates of alkali metal such as Li, Na, K and the amount of the compound used is 0.01-5wt.% in the liquid phase.
