Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable the obtaining of higher resolutions on the long range side regardless of a larger ratio of long and short ranges, by selecting a photoelectric current output from a light receiving area exposed to light most intensely to perform an analog computation. CONSTITUTION:A light receiving section [comprising (n) light receiving areas 521-52n) is formed by evenly diffusing P-type impurities on the surface side of a high resistance silicon substrate 51 while an n<+> type conductive layer 53 with n-type impurities diffused at a high density is formed on the back thereof 51. When light from an object to be measured is incident on the light receiving section as light spot, a distance to the object being measured is detected from a photoelectric current output drawn at both ends thereof. The areas 521-52n are provided with pairs of signal fetching electrodes 55a1-55a1 and 55b1-55bn and intervals of the respective pairs of signal leading-out electrodes are multiplied equally. The light receiving area exposed light most intensely is discriminated from photoelectric current outputted from the signal leading-out electrodes and the position of the light spot at the light receiving section is determined from the photoelectric current output selected based on the results of the discrimination to compute a distance to the object being measured.
