Abstract

PURPOSE:To purify a phenol simply and advantageously, by treating a reaction product of alkali melting of an aromatic sulfonic acid with water and an acid to give a hydrous phenol, heating the phenol approximately to the melting point of the formed phenol in a closed container and subjecting to liquid-liquid separation. CONSTITUTION:A reaction product of alkali melting of an aromatic sulfonic acid is treated with water and an acid to give a hydrous phenol, which is heated approximately to the melting point of the formed phenol in a closed container, separated into a liquid organic layer of the molten phenol and a water phase containing salts as by-products, the water phase is separated and removed from the organic phase to purity and collect the aimed phenol from the hydrous phenol without using an organic solvent, by efficiently liquid-liquid separation method instead of solid-liquid separation method at a higher separating rate than that of a well-known method with a small amount of waste water in high recovery ratio and advantageously with respect to both economy and industrial safety.
