Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce CO2 in an aq. soln. by coating a conductive polymer layer covering the surface of a conductive base body with a catalyst layer which develops a catalyst function to the reduction reaction of gaseous CO2. CONSTITUTION:An electrode 10 for reducing the gaseous CO2 is basically constituted of the conductive base body 1, the conductive polymer layer 2 and the catalyst layer 3. The conductive base body 1 and the conductive polymer layer 2 have preferably a large hydrogen overvoltage in electrolytic reduction and have further preferably a large overvoltage of oxygen reduction. A carbon material, platinum, gold, silver, Ni, etc., are utilizable as the conductive base body 1. An aniline polymer, phenolic deriv. polymer, thiophene polymer, etc., are used for the conductive polymer layer. Rare earth metals or the complexes thereof are preferable and Re is more particularly preferable as the catalyst layer. Provision of an auxiliary catalyst layer 8 is more preferable in terms of the life of the catalyst. Silver, copper, lead, tin, etc., are used for the auxiliary catalyst.
