Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the title copolymer of a desired MW and desired properties which may be liquid, solid, hydrophilic or hydrophobic as desired, by copolymerizing a polyoxyalkylene glycol monoallyl ether with maleic anhydride at a specified molar ratio. CONSTITUTION:A polyoxyalkylene glycol monoallyl ether (a) of the formula (wherein AO groups are 2-18C oxyalkylene groups of at least one kind, and when they are groups of two kinds or more, they may be in the form of blocked or random addition, R is a 1-3C alkyl or a saturated acyl, and n is the average number of moles of alkylene group added and is 1-1,000) is obtained by the addition reaction of allyl alcohol (i) with an alkylene oxide (ii) in the presence of a catalyst and reacting the adduct with a halohydrocarbon (iii) in the presence of an alkali or with a carboxylic acid (halide) (iv). Component (a) is mixed with maleic anhydride (b) and another monomer (c) at a molar ratio of 5-60:40-70:0-40, and the mixture is copolymerized to obtain the title copolymer containing at least two structural units of each of components (a)-(b).
