Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polyacetal having improved stability and mechanical properties in high yield, by reacting a polyoxymethylene with an alkylene oxide at a specific limit concentration or below in an organic medium in the presence of a Lewis acid.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A polyoxymethylene having a number-average molecular weight ≥10,000 is reacted with (B) an alkylene oxide, preferably ethylene oxide, kept at the limit concentration of the formula[M is the concentration of the component (B); Mc is the limit concentration; P is the concentration of the component (A)]or below in an organic medium in the presence of (C) a Lewis acid, preferably boron trifluoride dibutyl etherate, as a catalyst and the reaction is then completed by adding NaOH, etc. thereto to give the aimed polyacetal. Preferably, the catalyst (C) is used in a concentration range of 1×10-7W1× 10-1mole/l.
