Abstract

A copolyether glycol with terminal ester gps. is prepd. by reacting (A) THF with (B) an alkylene oxide contg. a 2-3C ring, or with a cyclic acetal of formula: (where n is 2-4; X and X1 are H, or 1-4C alkyl) in the presence of (C) a catalyst, and (D) a cpd. which can give an acylium ion R'-C +=O (where R' is H or hydrocarbon radical), esp. acetic anhydride. The catalyst is (a) a homopolymer of an ethylenically unsatd. monomer contg. gps. such that the final polymer contains the gps. (where represents the polymer chain or a chain segment; Z is H, 1-10C aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, or halogen; D is as Z or a polymer chain segment; X and Y are H, halogen, 1-10C aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, >=1 being F; R is a linear or branched gp. with a =40C principal chain); or (b) a copolymer of (a) with >=1 other ethylenically unsatd. monomer. The (co)polymer has an equiv. wt. of 950-1500 pref. 1000-1300 and dissolves at = about 5 wt.% in the reaction mass at the temp. of reaction. The copolyether glycol with terminal ester gps. can be converted to copolyether glycol which is used in the prepn. of polyurethanes.
