Abstract

A copolyether-glycol is prepd. by copolymerising an alkylene oxide or a cyclic acetal and tetrahydrofuran using water or an alkanediol as chain blocking agent, and as catalyst, a polymer (I) of monoethylenically unsatd. monomers, (I) contg. gps. of formula: where is the polymer (I) chain or a segment thereof, D is H, 1-10C aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon gp. a halogen or a segment of the polymer (I) chain, X and Y are H, aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon gp. or F, at least one of X and Y must be F, R is a linear or branched linking gp. having is not >40C in the main chain, and Z is H, 1-10C aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon gp. or halogen. (I) is free of functional gps. which would hinder the reaction. The physical nature of the catalyst and its low solubility in the reaction medium make it easy to separate from the reaction medium at the end of the reaction and minimise its loss during the reaction (cf. clay). The process can therefore be continuous. The prods are used in the prepn. of polyurethane.
