Examples of the strongly acidic cation exchange resin used in the present invention include styrene-based sulfonic acid type cation exchange resins, phenolsulfonic acid type cation exchange resins, and either gel type or macrobolus type can be used. Specifically, Amberlyst 15 (manufactured by Rohm and Haas), Amberlyte IR-118 (manufactured by Rohm and Haas), Dowex 50W X12 (manufactured by The Dow Chemical Company), Diamond Ion SKIB ( manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemical Industries, Ltd.). In particular, it is preferable to use these strongly acidic cation exchange resins in a substantially anhydrous state that has been dehydrated with an azeotropic agent such as an aromatic compound, such as benzene.

Polyethylene glycol dipropyl ether can be produced. Since the reaction can be carried out at low temperature with gentle stirring or low flow rate, there is little destruction of the strongly acidic cation exchange resin used as a catalyst. Further, unreacted raw materials of polyethylene glycol and propylene can be recycled.
