[Industrial Field of Application] The present invention relates to a method for producing a novel substituted salicylaldehyde copolymer. This substituted salicylaldehyde copolymer is useful as an intermediate for producing a novel photochromic polymer compound that develops color when exposed to ultraviolet light and decolors when left in the dark or when irradiated with visible light. The photochromic polymer compound produced in this way is
It can be used in a wide range of fields, including makeup cosmetics, textiles, decorative materials such as toys, image forming materials, recording materials, photosensitive materials, optical filters, display materials, and masking materials. [Prior Art] Until now, spiropyran derivatives have been the most applied research as photochromic compounds, but most of them are used as photochromic materials in a state where they are contained in a polymer binder. According to this method, spiropyran derivatives are It has disadvantages such as being eluted from the polymeric binder, not being uniformly dispersed, or causing phase separation and precipitation of crystals, and has not been able to fully demonstrate its performance as a photochromic material. [Problems to be Solved by the Invention] In order to eliminate the above-mentioned drawbacks, photochromic polymer compounds in which spiropyran derivatives are chemically bonded to polymer chains have been developed, but compared to research on low-molecular photochromic compounds, There are few examples of such research. In particular, among the development examples of photochromic polymer compounds, there is an example of a research report on a photochromic polymer compound having a structure obtained by a copolymerization reaction of a spiropyran derivative containing a vinyl group with another vinyl monomer.

It is only introduced in issues such as No.-30711 and Special Publication No. 51-7489. However, all of the examples reported in these publications are copolymers of spiropyran derivative monomers and vinyl monomers. However, this spiropyran derivative monomer is synthesized from a compound having a vinyl group and a spiropyran compound, and the vinyl group is not directly bonded to the spiropyran bone core, but is attached to the spiropyran via an acid amide bond or an ester bond. Attached to the bone nucleus. Therefore, such a copolymer is susceptible to hydrolysis, and as a result, the spiropyran derivative is eluted from the photochromic polymer compound, which poses a problem in the stability of the photochromic polymer compound. In view of these circumstances, the present inventors conducted intensive research to develop a photochromic polymer compound with a structure that would prevent spiropyran derivatives from eluting from the polymer due to hydrolysis, etc., and as a result, the polymer reaction succeeded in synthesizing a substituted salicylaldehyde copolymer that can produce such photochromic polymer compounds,
The present invention has now been completed. [Means for solving the problem] That is, according to the present invention, the following general formula is contained in the polymer.
(1) or (2) (In the formula, R 1 represents hydrogen, a nitro group, a halogen, a lower alkyl group, a lower alkoxy group, an aldehyde group, a carboxyl group, or a salt thereof, M represents another vinyl monomer unit, and m and n are positive integers. Provided is a method for producing a substituted salicylaldehyde copolymer containing the structural unit represented by The substituted salicylaldehyde copolymer according to the present invention has the general formula (3) or (4).

The high-molecular photochromic compound produced from the substituted salicylaldehyde copolymer of the present invention increases its stability by chemically bonding a low-molecular photochromic compound to the polymer side chain and polymerizing it. By converting or molding it, it becomes a useful material that exhibits photochromism, and can be used in a wide range of fields. Furthermore, this compound can also be used in a solvent or in a blended state with other polymers, like ordinary photochromic compounds.
The polymer compound thus obtained is useful because it does not have hydrolyzability, which is a disadvantage of photochromic polymer compounds obtained by conventional vinyl polymerization. Therefore, especially when used as a coloring material in makeup cosmetics, etc., it can be used as a safe photochromic material that is less absorbed into the skin than low-molecular photochromic compounds or hydrolyzable photochromic polymer compounds. It has the following characteristics.
