In the figure, a plurality of upper electrodes 3 and lower electrodes 4 each made of a transparent conductive film are layered in a band-like manner orthogonally to each other on opposing surfaces of an upper substrate 1 and a lower substrate 2 made of transparent glass plates. A liquid crystal alignment film 5 is formed on the surfaces where the upper electrode 3 and lower electrode 4 are formed by subjecting them to a rubbing treatment. 3 color filter SR,
8G and 6B are sequentially and repeatedly formed and arranged, and the upper substrate 1 and the lower substrate 2 are separated by a predetermined distance, and the peripheral portion thereof is sealed with a sealing material T containing a spacer to form an outer surrounding. The container is released and T N (T

To be sure, on the outer surface of this liquid crystal display element 9, that is, on the outer surfaces of the upper substrate 1 and the lower substrate 2, an upper polarizing plate 10 and a lower polarizing plate 11 are respectively adhered and arranged with their polarization axes or absorption axes completely parallel to each other to display a color display. A liquid crystal display device is configured.

。For example, in the case of red display, the color display liquid crystal display device configured as described above is configured to apply a predetermined voltage between the signal electrode on which the red filter 8R is formed and the scanning electrode. By changing the optical properties, that is, by transmitting the light incident on the liquid crystal portion corresponding to the red filter 6R, it can be perceived as a red display pattern from the upper substrate 1 side. It also shows a green pattern.

6G and 6B are two types of patterns shown in Fig. 3, large and small, ie, a large octagonal pattern 6a and a small square pattern 6b, which are formed alternately and continuously, and the pattern shape is changed for each color. are arranged in combination with each other, so two types of color filters, large and small, aRt8G,
If 6B is considered as one pixel (6 dots, conventionally 3 dots), 26 colors can be expressed without gradation by combining 6 dots, and 21 colors can be selected compared to the conventional QIC, 8 times more colors. It becomes possible to do so. In other words, the brightness of one color can be used in three levels as an area, and even an area where the brightness is increased in the same area in all gradation display rows can be visually appealing. This is extremely effective, for example, for emphasizing red and displaying warnings. In addition, since the color filters 6R, 6G, and 6B of each color are formed by alternately linking the octagonal pattern 6a and the quadrangular pattern 6b, the boundary between the color filter shapes is as shown in FIG. Since they are formed not in a straight line in the vertical direction but in an alternating manner, the vertical directionality of the color display pattern is reduced.
It is possible to display images with a well-balanced color ratio and display quality.

To explain in the case of 8G and 8B, even if the pattern structure formed by alternately connecting the circular pattern Rd and the diamond pattern 6d shown in the plan view of the main part in Figure TA4 is used, the same effect as described above can be obtained. る。As explained above, according to the present invention, a plurality of upper and lower electrodes are formed in a strip shape on the opposing surfaces of the light-transmitting upper and lower substrates arranged opposite to each other. The upper frame has color filters of each color formed at the bottom at a constant repeating period, and the color filters of each color are constructed by connecting and combining patterns of two types, large and small, so that the direction of color image display can be changed. This has the following excellent effects: the color is reduced, and a high-quality color display pattern can be obtained.
