Abstract

PURPOSE:To effectively utilize the entire display part by retarding a vertical synchronizing signal in displaying a laterally long picture and moving the long picture in a vertical direction of the display part and collecting the remaining part of the display part to the upper or the lower part only and displaying a slave pattern to the part. CONSTITUTION:With switches 8, 13 through respectively to the positions A, C, the existing standard television signal (a) inputted to an input terminal 1 is supplied to a signal processing circuit 9 and a synchronizing signal generating circuit 11. The circuit 11 generates a horizontal synchronizing signal and a vertical synchronizing signal (b) to drive a display device 10 and inputs them to the display device 10. In this case, the middle part of the reproduced picture of the existing standard television signal is displayed to be the same as the middle part of the display part of the display device 10. When the switch 8 is thrown to the position B and the long picture from a VTR or the like is inputted through an input terminal 2 and a synthesis circuit 7, with the switch 13 thrown to the position D, a vertical synchronizing signal (e) being the result of retarding the output of the synchronizing signal generating circuit 11 by a delay circuit 12 by DELTAt as the vertical synchronizing signal is used and then the long reproduced picture is moved upward. Thus, since the remaining part is caused only at the lower part of the display part of the display device 10, the picture inputted from input terminals 3-6 is displayed to the part as a slave pattern.

Means for Solving the Problems In order to achieve this object, the television receiver of the present invention delays the vertical synchronization signal when displaying a horizontally long image and moves the horizontally long image in the vertical direction of the display area. In this way, the remaining portion of the display area, which had been scattered at two locations above and below, is concentrated only in the upper or lower portion, and a sub-screen is displayed in that portion.

First, consider the case where the switches 8 and 13 are on the A and C sides, respectively. A current standard television signal (FIG. 2a) inputted to the input terminal 1 is connected to a signal processing circuit 9 and also to a synchronizing signal generation circuit 11. A synchronizing signal generating circuit 11 generates a horizontal synchronizing signal and a vertical synchronizing signal (FIG. 2b) for driving the display 1o. Since the switch 13 is connected to the C side, the horizontal synchronizing signal and vertical synchronizing signal are the output signals of the synchronizing signal generating circuit 11, and these are input to the display 10. At this time, the center of the reproduced image of the current standard television signal is displayed so as to be the same as the center of the display portion of the display 10.

Next, consider a case where the switch 8 is connected to the mouth side and a horizontally long image (FIG. 2C) from a VTR, video disk, etc. is inputted through the input terminal 2 and the composition circuit 7. Note that for the sake of simplicity, it is assumed that there are no input signals to the input terminals 3 to 6. The horizontally long image signal is connected to the display 1o through the signal processing circuit 9, and is also connected to the synchronization signal generation circuit 11, which outputs a horizontal synchronization signal and a vertical synchronization signal. If the switch 13 is on the C side, the vertical synchronizing signal given to the display 10 is not as shown in d of Fig. 2, and the horizontally long image reproduced on the display 10 becomes the screen shown in Fig. 6 explained in the conventional example. However, when the switch 13 is connected to the second side, the synchronization signal generation circuit 1 is used as a vertical synchronization signal.
By using a vertical synchronizing signal (e in FIG. 2) obtained by delaying the output d in FIG. 2 by Δt by the delay circuit 12, the horizontally long reproduced image can be moved upward.

Therefore, a residual portion is generated only in the lower part of the display portion of the display 10, and the images inputted from the input terminals 3 to 6 are displayed there as a sub-screen.

Since the aspect ratio of the display portion 21 is the same as that of the reproduced image of the current standard television signal, 3=4, that is, 0.7.
The ratio is 5:1. In this display area, the aspect ratio of the playback image is 9:
16, that is, a horizontally long video signal 22 having a ratio of 0.56:1. At this time, the upper end of the horizontally long image 22 is displayed to match the upper end of the display portion 21, or the lower end of the image 22 is projected to match the lower end of the display portion 21.

In this case, the lower part of the display part 21 has an aspect ratio of 0.19:1.

For example, in FIG. 3, images with an aspect ratio of 3=4 (0.19:0.25) can be displayed on four screens, as shown by sub-screens 25 to 28. Further, as shown in FIG. 4, three sub-screens may be displayed, and a black blanking portion or an optional color screen (32 to 36) may be provided between the sub-screens.

In addition, in FIGS. 3 and 4, the horizontally long image 22 is displayed in the display area 2.
