かに摺動し、かつ該摺動面間を横切つて流体が洩
れないよう極めて精密な平面に仕上げられている
が、実際使用される場合は圧力および温度等の影
響により摺動面が歪み洩れ易くなる。したがつ
て、一般に一方のリング部材aが若干歪んでも他
方のリング部材bが、該リング部材aに倣うよう
リング部材bの摺動面をカーボンのごとき軟質
(低ヤング率)の材料で構成されるが、当該メカ
ニカルシールを、たとえば自動車エンジン冷却用
ウオーターポンプ内にて使用すると該エンジン鋳
造時の鋳物砂が密封流体内に残存しており、この
ためカーボン材になる前記リング部材bが第2図
に示すごとく摺動面の密封流体側において著しく
摩耗する欠点を有している。

外層部1bが形成されている。この外層部1bは
厚さ約1mm程になり、スラリーを含む密封流体が
摺動面3の外周から除々に侵入して該摺動面3の
密封流体側を摩耗させるのを防止するものであ
る。

形成されるならば充分にその効果を発揮すること

は通常の硬度の低いカーボン材によつて形成され
ているためリング部材に対する追随性が低下して
密封効果が小さくなるということはない。本考案
の実用的効果には極めて大なるものがある。
