Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the amt. of water-soluble resin to be used for the prepn. of a substrate and to prevent generation of pinholes by coating a water-soluble resin having dyeability and photosensitivity contg. a surface active agent on a substrate provided with electrodes, and exposing necessary parts, developing and then dyeing to form a color filter covering the electrodes. CONSTITUTION:Over the whole region of the surface of an electrode substrate 1, a water-soluble resin having dyeability and photosensitivity is coated to form resin film 3. After forming the resin film 3 from the water-soluble resin contg. previously added surface active agent, the film is prebaked and a photomask 4 is arranged, and a necessary part of the resin film 3 corresponding to the electrode 2 for the first color is irradiated with ultraviolt rays through an opening window 4a of the photomask 4 to expose and set the resin film. The substrate 5 of the color filter is formed by developing the exposed part, and other part is washed off. After executing post-baking, the substrate 5 is dipped in a specified dyeing liquid to perform dyeing forming thus the color filter 5R for the first color. Then, the dyeing liquid for the color filter 5R is adhered fixedly to the substrate 5, and a resist printing film 6 for the first layer is formed on the whole upper surface so as to prevent from dyeing with other dyeing liquid.

In general, a liquid crystal display element has a scanning electrode substrate and a signal electrode substrate placed opposite to each other with a liquid crystal in between, and applies a voltage between the electrodes at arbitrary portions of both substrates to change the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules at that portion. This change reduces the transmission of light, and images and the like are displayed based on this control. In the color liquid crystal display element, a color filter is provided on the inner surface of the signal electrode substrate so as to face the electrodes, and color display is performed through this color filter.

To explain the process of forming a color filter, first, a water-soluble resin having dyeability and photosensitivity is uniformly applied onto a substrate on which Nti is arranged, and then required portions of this water-soluble resin are exposed and developed. This developed area is dyed to form a color filter.

However, the water-soluble resin applied to the glass substrate is
Because it is water-soluble, it has high surface tension and poor wettability (compatibility) with the substrate, so a large amount of water-soluble resin must be used to spread it over the entire substrate. This poses a major economic disadvantage, and its strong surface tension tends to cause pinholes to form in the resin film, reducing reliability.

This invention was made with attention to these points, and its purpose is to improve economic efficiency by reducing the amount of water-soluble resin used to form the substrate of color filters, and to reduce the number of pinholes. It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for forming a color filter that can prevent this from occurring.

As shown in FIG. 1, first, the electrode substrate 1 is cleaned, and a water-soluble resin having dyeability and photosensitivity, such as greens, gelatin, and casein, is applied over the entire area using a spinner or coater. Apply by means such as coating,
A resin 103 is formed (step a). Here, a surfactant is added to the water-soluble resin in advance. That is, for example, when the water-soluble resin is gelatin, a fluorine-based surfactant (such as Florard FC-430 manufactured by Sumitomo 3M) is added.

The water-soluble resin to which a surfactant is added has improved wettability with respect to the glass electrode substrate 1, and adheres well to the electrode substrate 1, so that it can be used in a small amount to form the electrode substrate 1. A uniform resin film 3 can be formed by widely diffusing the water-soluble resin over the entire upper surface, and pinholes can also be prevented from occurring.

After forming the resin film 3 from the water-soluble resin in this way, this resin GL13 is prebaked, and a photomask 4 is placed above it.
Resin T! through the opening window 4a! A required portion of I3, that is, a portion corresponding to the electrode 2 to which a first color, for example, red color filter is to be applied, is exposed to ultraviolet rays and cured by photopolymerization (step b). Then, the exposed area is developed with water, an organic solvent, etc. to form the substrate 5 of the color filter, and the other areas are washed away (step C). Furthermore, a boost bake is performed to tighten the film of the substrate 5. Thereafter, the substrate 5 is immersed in a dyeing liquid having predetermined color characteristics to be dyed to form a first red color filter 5R (step d).
). Then, in order to fix the staining liquid of the color filter 5R to the substrate 5 and prevent other staining liquids from staining the color filter 5R, the entire upper surface of the electrode substrate 1 is coated with a tannin/tartarstone method or a resin coating. A first layer resisting film 6 is formed by a method (step e).

After forming the first color filter 5R in this way, repeat the steps a to e above to apply a second color filter, for example, green, as shown in FIG. A green color filter 5G is uniformly formed on the electrode 2, this color filter 5G is covered with a second layer of anti-dye coating 7, and the process is repeated to form a third color, for example, blue. A blue color filter 6B is similarly formed on the electrode 2 to which the color filter is to be applied, and this color filter 6B is covered with a third layer of resist dyeing 18. Finally, an alignment film 9 is formed over the entire area on the electrode substrate 1 so as to cover each electrode 2.

In the above examples, natural resins such as gris and gelatin were used as water-soluble resins, but synthetic resins such as acrylic, methacrylic, and polyamide resins are also water-soluble. There is no problem with such a synthetic resin, and it can be used as the water-soluble resin in the present invention.

[Effects of the Invention] As explained above, according to the present invention, a surfactant is added to a water-soluble resin having dyeability and photosensitivity, and this is applied onto a substrate, so that the wettability of the substrate is reduced. Therefore, even a small amount of water-soluble resin can be widely spread and uniformly distributed on the substrate, which reduces the amount of water-soluble resin used and improves economic efficiency. Moreover, since the water-soluble resin spreads well, the occurrence of pinholes can be prevented and reliability can be improved.
