The present invention relates to novel polymeric substances. There is a constant demand for the emergence of industrial products with improved physical properties, and for example, there has been a great deal of interest in carbon fibers recently. Carbon fiber has a very high modulus (4.2×10 11 N/
m 2 ), but it is very expensive and its applications are limited. Fibers formed from polymers such as polyethylene by conventional methods are inexpensive but have poor elastic modulus (approximately 0.5 x 0.7 x 10 10 N/
m2 ). The present invention provides a novel polymeric material molded article with improved physical properties. That is, the present invention relates to a polyethylene polymer material, which has a weight average molecular weight of less than 200,000, a number average molecular weight of less than 20,000, and a ratio of weight average molecular weight w to number average molecular weight n of n> 104 , w/n<4. 10 and n=10 4 , w/n<20, and the Young's modulus defined later is 3
Provided is an oriented high-density polyethylene stretch molded body having a diameter of more than ×10 10 N/m 2 . As used herein, high-density polyethylene polymers are essentially linear ethylene homopolymers or copolymers containing about 95% or more ethylene by weight and are defined in the British Standard Specification No. 3412 (1966 ) Manufactured by Appendix A and Appendix B (1)
British Standard Specification No. 2782 (1970) Method 509B.
Density when measured by the method of approximately 0.85 to 1.0
g/ cm3 . Preferably, the polymer is cooled at a rate of about 2-10°C per minute to about 100-120°C, followed by rapid cooling, usually to a lower temperature. In continuous operation, this rapid cooling step may be omitted and stretching may be performed immediately after the slow cooling step. Preferably, the polymer has a weight average molecular weight (w) of 50,000 to 150,000. The number average molecular weight (n) is preferably from 5,000 to 15,000. Furthermore, the ratio of weight average molecular weight to number average molecular weight is preferably about 18 or less. Particularly for polymers with a relatively narrow molecular weight distribution, i.e., n>10 4 w/
Good results can be obtained by using a material in which w/n<15 when n<6 and n104 . Note that the molecular weights cited in this specification are those measured by gel permeation chromatography. Although the present invention is not limited by any particular theory, it is believed that by subjecting a polymer having the desired morphology to a plastic deformation process, highly oriented polymer molecules can be obtained.
A particularly preferred plastic deformation process consists of stretching the polymer to a stretch ratio of at least 15, preferably at least about 20. Of course, the stretching tension is smaller than the tensile strength of the polymer, but
It is necessary that the polymer be drawn at a speed and temperature such that the elongation of the polymer is greater than that which would occur by flow drawing and is sufficient to produce the necessary orientation. Preferably, the stretching temperature is at least about 40°C below the melting point of the polymer. The stretching speed depends on the stretching temperature and the form of the polymer, but may generally be 1 cm per minute or more, for example about 10 to 20 cm per minute or more. Preferably, the stretching temperature is about 60-90°C and the stretching ratio is at least 18, preferably about 25-60. The physical properties of the polymer can often be improved by carrying out stretching during the enhancement phase and pausing during the continuation phase. Stretching is preferably carried out on polymers with relatively small cross sections, and the present invention is particularly suitable for producing fibers and films. especially,
Continuous filaments can be produced by melt spinning and drawing on a drawing frame. For convenience, the diameter of the fiber or the thickness of the film is preferably 1 mm or less before stretching. Deformation ratio or stretch ratio herein is defined as the ratio of final length to initial length or the ratio of cross-sectional area before and after stretching. According to the method of the invention, it is possible to obtain polymers having a Young's modulus (defined below) of 3×10 10 N/m 2 or more, in some cases at least 6×10 10 N/m 2 . Since the Young's modulus of polymeric substances depends on the measurement method, in this specification, the Young's modulus is
At 21℃ by Detsudo Roding Creep Test
It is defined as the elastic modulus when 0.1% strain is maintained for 10 seconds and the stress is measured. This test method was developed by Gupta and Ward: Journal of Macromolecular Science and Physics.
B1, 373 (1967). According to the method of the invention, polymer molecules are oriented in essentially perfect straight lines by plastic deformation. Although molecular orientation is generally uniaxial, it is also possible to obtain a biaxially oriented polymeric material by employing an appropriate stretching method. The presence of essentially perfect orientation can be confirmed by physical measurements such as X-ray diffraction or nuclear magnetic resonance. A simple test is performed by measuring the weight loss of the polymer in fuming nitric acid, which measures the integrity of the polymer. Less weight loss means higher integrity. The polyethylene polymer according to the invention has a highly oriented structure as observed by X-ray diffraction and nuclear magnetic resonance. In particular, a sample having an elastic modulus of 5×10 10 N/m 2 or more has a weight loss rate of 5% or less even when stored in fuming nitric acid at 60° C. for 10 days. The theoretical Young's modulus of polyethylene is 24×
10 10 N/m 2 , and it can be seen that the polymer obtained according to the invention has a Young's modulus very close to this value. By this invention 4×
Young's modulus greater than 10 10 N/m 2 and often 5 to 7×
Polyethylene with a Young's modulus in the range 10 10 N/m 2 can be obtained. The polyethylene polymer according to the invention can be obtained in a form with a structurally uniform bond. They are strong and unbreakable. For example, polyethylene fibers have an extensibility of at least 7%;
It can be made into a fiber. The invention will be explained in further detail in the following examples. Example 1 Isotropic filaments with a diameter of 0.06 to 0.07 cm are obtained by melt spinning at 190° C. through a die with a diameter of 0.1 dm. This filament is 23r.
It is wound onto a 5.5 cm diameter cylinder that rotates at a speed of pm. The cooling rate of the polymer is adjusted to 5°C per minute and the resulting structure is quenched and held when the temperature reaches 115°C. Samples 3-4 cm in length are stretched using an Instron tensile tester at 72 DEG C. for 30-45 seconds at a crosshead speed of 20 cm/min. The drawing ratio is determined based on the variation of the filament cross section. Two types of polymers selected from commercially available BP high-density polyethylene are used as samples. One is 075-60 grade, melt flow index 8, n: 14450, w: 69100 when measured at a temperature of 190°C and a load of 2.14 kg. The other is Rigidex 9, which has a melt flow index of 0.9, n: 6060, and w: 126600. Measure Young's modulus for 10 seconds at room temperature (21°C).
075-60 grade has narrow molecular weight distribution, i.e. w/n = 4.8, stretch ratio: 20, Young's modulus 4.0×
A stretched molded product with a strength of 10 10 N/m 2 is obtained. On the other hand, Rigidex 9 has a wide molecular weight distribution, i.e. w/n
It has a high weight average molecular weight of =20.9, and as a result, a stretched molded article with a considerably low Young's modulus can be obtained. Continuous filaments of the materials described above can be stretched on a stretching frame to give similar results. Example 2 By compression molding high-density polyethylene pellets between two copper plates at 160°C,
Obtain a 0.07cm thick sheet. Remove this sheet from the press and slowly press it at a rate of 7 to 9 degrees Celsius per minute.
Cool to 100°C (measured on the surface of the copper plate) and then quench in cold water. Length 2cm, width 0.5
cm rectangular specimens were tested using an Instron tensile tester at 75°C with a crosshead speed of 10 cm/min.
Stretch for ~90 seconds. The stretching ratio is measured by making marks at intervals of 0.2 or 0.1 cm on the surface of the sample before stretching. Two grades of commercially available BP high-density polyethylene were used as samples. Rigidex 50 has a melt flow index of 5.5, n: 6180, w: 101450, and 140
-60 grade is Melt Flow Index 12,
n: 13350, w: 67800. Rigitex 50
The maximum draw ratio for the 140-60 grade is determined to be 30 and 37-38 for the 140-60 grade. The Young's modulus of representative samples was measured at room temperature for 10 seconds and the results are shown in the table below.
