Abstract

1469526 High density polyethylene films and fibres NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 6 March 1974 [6 March 1973] 10746/73 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Fibres and films are formed from high density polyethylene having a weight average molecular weight (M w ) less than 200,000 and a number average molecular weight (M n ) less than 20,000 and a ratio M w /M n of less than 10 when M n is above 10<SP>4</SP> or less than 20 when M n is not above 10<SP>4</SP> which has been subjected to a thermal treatment in which it is cooled from at or near its melting point at a rate of 1-15‹ C. per minute to at least 15‹ C. below its melting point preferably followed by quenching then drawing at a temperature and rate such that the deformation ratio is at least 15 whereby the product has a Young's modulus greater than 3 Î 10<SP>10</SP> N/m.<SP>2</SP>. The material may be in fibre or film form and may be uniaxially or biaxially oriented. Films are formed by compression moulding.
