Abstract

PURPOSE:To lower a power consumption by providing an AND circuit of a motor signal and a drive select signal and turning on a rotating drive device of a floppy disk only when a logical of both the signals is '1'. CONSTITUTION:In an FDD 2, an on-off means 3 on-off controls a rotating drive device. An AND circuit 5 receives a motor 'on' signal MON from an FDDC 1 and a drive select signal DS and supplies and AND signal of both of signals to the on-off means. When both the motor 'on' signal MON and the drive select signal DS is logical '1', the AND circuit 5 outputs logical '1', and the on-off means 3 turns on a rotating drive device 4 of an FD. When at least one of the motor 'on' signal MON and the drive select signal DS is logical '0', the AND circuit 5 outputs logical '0', and the on-off means 3 turns off the rotating drive device 4 of the FD namely brings to a stand by condition. Thereby, a complete low power consumption can be realized.

A floppy disk (hereinafter referred to as FD) with a magnetic recording medium coated on the surface of a flexible plastic thin film is driven to rotate, and an IJ-dry head is moved in the radial direction of the FD to record information at a desired track position. A 5FDD is well known and is widely used as an external storage device for computers.

Due to the recent demand for miniaturization, these types of FDs and FDDs have become smaller and portable. For this reason, there is a strong desire for FDDs to have lower power consumption in order to suppress the heat generation of the device itself and to accommodate the adoption of small capacity batteries in portable FDDs.

The FDD 22 has an FD rotation drive device 24 and an on/off means 23 for controlling the rotation drive device on and off.
The rotary drive device 24 is controlled into a rotating state and a non-rotating state (hereinafter referred to as a standby state) by a motor on signal MON supplied from 1 to the on/off means 23.

However, with such conventional technology, a standby state as a low power consumption state cannot be sufficiently obtained, resulting in insufficient reduction in power consumption.

That is, in the control using the motor-on signal MON shown in FIG. 2, even when the drive select signal DS is logic 0, that is, no drive is selected, if the motor-on signal MON is logic 1, the standby state will not occur. Further, in the control using the drive select signal DS, even when the motor-on signal MON is a logic 0, that is, there is no need to turn on the FD rotation drive device, if the drive select signal DS is a logic 1, the standby state will not occur. Furthermore, in the control based on the logical sum of the drive select signal DS and the motor-on signal MON, even if one of the two signals is at logic 0, the standby state will not occur if the other is at logic 1.

Here, when both the motor on signal MON and the drive select signal DS are logic 1, the AND circuit 5 outputs logic 1, and the on/off means 6 turns on the FD rotation drive device 4. The on/off means 6 outputs the lesser of the motor on signal MON and the drive select signal 1)S, and the on/off means 6 turns off the FD rotational drive device 4, that is, puts it into a standby state.
