Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a titanium oxynitride black pigment which is compatible with resins and has improved dispersibility, heat resistance and safety, by incorporating oxygen and nitrogen in a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:Titanium dioxide is reacted with ammonia to obtain a black titanium oxynitride powder contg. 4-35wt% oxygen and 2-20wt% nitrogen (with a weight ratio of O/N of 15-0.2). The oxygen and nitrogen contents of the titanium oxynitride vary depending on reaction temp., reaction time, NH3 flow rate, NH3 pressure, etc. Pref. the reaction temp. is 550-950 deg.C. When the reaction temp. is lower than 500 deg.C, the reaction does not progress and the powder is bluish grey, while when it exceeds 950 deg.C, the powder is liable to be sintered and pigment characteristics are lowered. The reaction time varies depending on reaction temp., NH3 flow rate and NH3 pressure. With regard to NH3 pressure, the reaction progresses even under atmospheric pressure and a black powder can be obtd. Hewever, when the reaction is carried out under a pressure of 2-3kg/cm<2>, the reaction rate and the nitrogen content are increased, so that a powder having a high blackness can be obtd.
