Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the lowering of shielding effect in a power cable by connecting a direct current to both ends of a metal shielding layer thereof to detect the deterioration in the shielding layer from the direct current flowing through the metal shielding layer. CONSTITUTION:A DC power source 16 is connected to both ends of a metal shielding layer 12 of a power cable 10 through an ammeter 14 which detects the direct current I flowing through the shielding layer 12. In operation, when water is contained in the shielding layer 12, the contact resistance between laps rises to reduce the direct current I thereby enabling the measurement of the degree of deterioration in the shielding layer 12. This can prevent the lowering of shielding effect of the power cable as early as possible.

The metal shielding layer of an electric power cable is generally formed by wrapping metal tape around an insulator, but if the waterproofness of the electric power cable decreases and the metal shielding layer contains a large amount of water, The contact resistance between the wraps increases and deteriorates, the shielding effect of the power cable decreases, and the influence on the outside becomes large, which is unfavorable. Furthermore, if the metal shielding layer has deteriorated, it means that moisture has entered the multiple wires, so there is a high possibility that the insulating material is causing water tree deterioration.

The resistance value of the copper tape shielding layer of the new 15KV power cable is 6 ohms/□ on average, as shown in Figure 2. Therefore, if the DC current I changes from its normal value distribution, it can be considered that the shielding layer has deteriorated. For example, as the shielding layer deteriorates, the resistance @4 will be on the order of 20 ohms/km and the detected DC current will decrease by 30%.
