Abstract

PURPOSE:To make cooling of a billet uniform by connecting cooling water supply pipes to a concentrical header pipe provided around the billet in the tangential direction thereof and injecting mist-like cooling water from the holes on the inside of the header pipe toward the billet in the direction tangential thereto. CONSTITUTION:An annular header pipe 3 fixed concentrically with a round billet 1 moving horizontally is provided around the round billet and at least two supply pipes 4 for cooling water are connected to the pipe 3 in the tangential direction thereof. At least two cooling water injection holes 5 inclined at a prescribed angle toward the tangential direction of the billet 1 are provided on the inside of the pipe 3. The mist-like cooling water consisting of a mixture composed of the cooling water and air supplied into the pipe 4 is thereby injected along the circumferential direction of the billet 1 surface from the holes 5 while said billet is rotated at a high speed along the pipe 3. The uniform cooling of the round billet is thus made possible and generation of longitudinal cracks and flaws is prevented.
