CONSTITUTION:In the exhaust gas passage 2 of an engine, an electrical dust collector 3 for collecting minute carbon particles which consists of dust collecting electrodes 4 and 4' onto which high voltage is supplied from a high-voltage power source 10 and discharge electrodes 5 and 5'. Inside the electrical dust collector 3, a fuel pump 7 and an air pump 8 are connected, and a fuel injector 6 which gushes-out mixed gas for combustion and a ignitor 6 are installed on the upstream side from the dust collecting electrodes 4 and 4' and the discharge electrodes 5 and 5'. When a large amount of carbon is collected onto the dust collecting electrodes 4 and 4' and arc discharge is generated between the discharge electrodes 5 and 5', a spark detector 11 detects said arc discharge, and an electronic controller 13 operates the fuel pump 7, air pump 8, and the ignitor 9.

By the way, when the engine I is operated for a long time, the dust collection electrode 4.4'
A large amount of fine carbon particles are deposited on the surface of the discharge electrode 5, 5', and the distance between the deposited fine carbon particles and the discharge electrodes 5, 5' becomes short, and a spark discharge occurs during this time. The discharge current due to this spark discharge is detected by a spark discharge detector 11, and the frequency of occurrence of spark discharge is further detected by an electronic control unit 13. When the amount of deposited carbon particles is large and the frequency of occurrence of spark discharge is higher than a predetermined value, the electronic control unit 13

On the other hand, the electromagnetic switch 12 is also driven, high voltage is supplied from the high voltage power supply 10 to the ignition device 9, and the fuel is ignited. In this way, the fuel injected into the electrostatic precipitator 3 reaches the dust collecting electrodes 4, 4' while burning.
Burn and purify the carbon particles deposited on 4'. After a predetermined period of time has elapsed, the operation of the fuel cylinder 7D7, air pump 8, and electromagnetic switch 12 is stopped, and the electrostatic precipitator 3 again collects the car in the exhaust gas.
