Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable to absorb oil not only floating on the surface of the water but also existent below the surface of the water, by adding slurry matter obtd. by dispersing a powdery norbornene polymer in alcohol-contg. water to the oil floating on the surface of the water or sea water. CONSTITUTION:Slurry matter obtd. by dispersing a powdery norbornene polymer such as an open-ring polymer of bicyclo(2,2,1)heptene-2 in alcohol-contg. water is added to oil floating on the surface of the water or sea water. The thin film of the norbornene polymer which has absorbed the oil, swollen and gelled into a gelatinous state has sufficient strength without being crushed into fine pieces by the action of waves. Hence, it is recovered by an ordinary recovering method by using a net or a suction pump. Since this method uses the slurry oil absorbent, its treatment is easy. The oil on and below the surface of the water is absorbed and formed into the gelatinous state to alleviate the malignancy of the oil and to facilitate the removal of the oil from the water or sea water.

Conventionally, utilizing the above-mentioned properties of norbornene-based polymer powder, norbornene-based polymer powder has been directly applied to surfaces where oil is floating, for the purpose of absorbing and removing waste oil and waste oil from the surface of water, seawater, etc. A method has been proposed for spraying on the soil (Japanese Patent Application No. 50-128263). However, although the polymer is lighter than water or seawater and floats on the water surface, it does not disperse in water or seawater, so it absorbs oil on the surface of water or seawater, but absorbs oil dispersed in water or seawater. As a result, the oil absorption efficiency is poor, which is not completely satisfactory.

The present inventors have arrived at the present invention as a result of repeated studies to improve the above-mentioned drawbacks. An object of the present invention is to provide an oil removal or recovery method that is easy to handle and has improved oil absorption efficiency. This is achieved by adding the same to water or oil floating on the surface of seawater. Since the method of the present invention can absorb not only oil above the water surface but also below the water surface (dispersed in water), it is an oil removal or recovery method with excellent oil absorption efficiency.
