DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to the coating of optical fibers with radiation-curable coating compositions, which can be applied directly to the glass surface of optical fibers and are commonly used to provide desirable mechanical strength. The present invention relates to providing UV curable compositions that are harder and more durable than traditional low modulus buffer coatings that require double coatings.

Optical glass fibers are becoming increasingly important for communications purposes, but the use of glass fibers requires protection of the glass surface from moisture and abrasion. This protection is achieved by coating the glass fibers immediately after their formation. Although solvent solution coating and extrusion have been applied, these problems have been ameliorated by the use of UV curable coating compositions.

One problem that arises from the use of coatings that are adhered to the glass surface of optical fibers is the problem of microbending of the fiber caused by deviations in response to temperature changes between the glass and the coating. This is particularly noticeable in very low temperature environments.

A solution to this problem is to choose a Zolaimary coating with a very low modulus.
UV curable coating compositions with this low modulus have been developed. Regarding this matter, see U.S. Patent Application No. 170,148 (filing date: July 18, 1980, inventor: Robert E. Ansel).

In order to provide the desired low modulus of the primary coating, the desirable hardness and toughness of the coating in contact with the glass must be sacrificed, so a secondary coating was applied over the primary coating. This requires two coatings to be applied and cured, complicating manufacturing and increasing product cost. The present invention has a sufficiently low modulus to minimize microbending problems at low temperatures, yet is harder and tougher than conventional coatings, making commercial implementation possible with a single radiation-curable coating. It is intended to provide coatings that

More specifically about polyurethanes with diacrylate end groups, these have a crystallization temperature of 400 to 5,000°, preferably 8
It is produced by placing an acrylate functional end group on a diisocyanate terminated compound having a molecular weight ranging from 0.00 to 2,500. Although several methods of preparation are used, the diisocyanate-terminated compound is the reaction product of an organic diisocyanate and two inanate-reactive hydrogen atoms. Hydrogen atoms are -OH, -8H
or -NH2 group. These diisocyanate-terminated reaction products contain 2 to 10, preferably 2 to 4, urethane and/or urea groups.

Diacrylate termination of diisocyanates is accomplished in a variety of ways. That is, a polymeric diisocyanate is first formed and then reacted with a 2 molar proportion of hydroxyl alkyl acrylate to attach one unsaturated group to each isocyanate base. These hydroxy alkyl acrylates have 2 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group. Examples are 2-hydroxy ethyl acrylate and 2-hydroxy progylacrylate. Alternatively, the hydroxyalkyl acrylate is first reacted with 1 mole of a low molecular weight diisocyanate, and then 2 moles of the resulting unsaturated monoisocyanate are reacted with 1 mole of the dihydroxy compound giving the desired molecular weight.

Urea groups may be introduced into the polyurethane by reaction of 1 mole of the aforementioned diisocyanate with 1 mole of hydroxyethyl acrylate to give an unsaturated urethane product containing one unreacted incyanate group. A polyurea polyurethane having two terminal acrylate groups can then be obtained by reacting this monoisocyanate with 1 mole of cyamine such as butylene diamine.

Second, the polyurethane itself is too viscous to be applied quickly. At the same time, the radiation-cured products are also too stiff and do not exhibit sufficient elasticity (modulus too high). In the present invention, it has been found that relatively small proportions of low Tg liquid monomers lower the viscosity and increase the rate of radiation curing. It is surprising and extremely important that low Tg liquid monomers reduce modulus without unduly weakening the coating. As a result, the coating can be applied at a reasonable rate, radiation-cured to have a sufficiently low modulus, and sufficiently hard and tough to overcome the expected abrasion forces so that micro-bending is avoided. It is minimized.

The low Tg liquid monomer is preferably used in an amount of 5 to 15 parts of the coating composition, such as ethylhexyl
acrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate. However, the selection of special ether monomers, such as dicyclopentenyl oquinethyl acrylate, phenoxyethyl acrylate and especially ethoxyethoxyethyl acrylate, gives the desired results in a preferred manner. This monomer has low viscosity, and increased curing speed and high tensile strength.
Coating compositions characterized by hardness and puncture strength can be provided. It is also achieved that the coefficient of thermal expansion is lowered below the glass transition temperature. These advantages can be obtained without excessively increasing the modulus. Less triacrylate,
Modification using more ethoxy ethoxyethyl acrylate gives even more satisfactory physical properties, yet in this case the viscosity is sufficiently low that the curing rate is increased to a lesser extent and the modulus is also lowered.

It is also useful to have triacrylates present in the coating composition in amounts of 1 to 15 inches. Trimethylol propane triacrylate is preferred, but pentaerythritol triacrylate can also be used. Although triacrylates are advantageous because they reduce coating viscosity and increase cure speed, satisfactory properties may be achieved without them.

The radiation for curing varies with the photoinitiator used. Visible light can also be utilized with the use of suitable photoinitiators. Examples of photoinitiators are camphorquinone and coumarin used in conjunction with tertiary amines such as triethylamine. Diphenylpendiylphosphine oxide is useful in the ultraviolet and near ultraviolet regions.

Since ultraviolet radiation is preferred, acrylic unsaturation is best, but if the nature of the radiation changes, unsaturated components of specific characteristics are used accordingly. Examples of other useful unsaturated components include methacrylate, itacon, croton, allyl, and vinyl. The radiation curable coating provided by the present invention for use in bonding or coating flexible floor tiles is of particular unique interest when applied as a single coating on optical glass fibers. . No matter where the coating composition of the present invention is used and no matter what radiation energy is used to cure it, the coating has a low modulus and is highly susceptible to microbending of optical fibers at low temperatures. It has an excellent combination of hardness and toughness that makes it useful as a stand-alone coating on fibers.

Most radiation curable coatings have very high modulus and are too brittle for use in the present invention. Modifying these brittle coatings to make them less brittle results in a loss of strength. In contrast, the coating of the present invention has a combination of low modulus and low strength, making it suitable for the specific applications mentioned above.

In some cases, it may be desirable to increase the mechanical stripping ability of the coating to facilitate removal of the coating from the glass surface adjacent the end of the fiber without unduly abrading the glass surface. However, for purposes such as easy removability, the coatings of the present invention can be removed mechanically with minimal wear with care, or by other methods such as with the aid of strong solvents. So.
