A ribbon defect detection device for detecting a defect in an ink ribbon due to the occurrence of a defective ink ribbon, wherein a comb-like claw is provided in the ribbon running path to fit into a torn hole in the ribbon and forcibly stop the running of the ribbon. This is accomplished by a ribbon failure detection device.
