PURPOSE:To keep the maximum output of a playback pilot signal, by reproducing a pilot signal recorded at tape halt state, applying it to both inputs of a comparator via two sample hold circuits, and making switch every time when the output changes. CONSTITUTION:When a start switch 20 is depressed, a signal f1 is recorded with a rotary head 3 via FFs 41,42' and differentiation circuit 54, and the count value of a counter 27 is reset. A playback signal from a rotary head 4 is inputted to sample hold circuits SHs 44,45 via a band pass filter 31. The signal is subject to sample hold with sampling pulses from AND circuits 51,52 and the output is applied to terminals of a comparator 46. If positive input is greater than negative input, the output H of the comparator 46 is applied to an FF 47. The Q output is at H with the signal from a delay circuit 55, and an applying voltage given to a drive element 6 for the change through a differentiation circuit 48, latch circuit 33, counter 27, D/A conversion circuit 28, and amplifier 29, is increased to keep the maximum playback output.
