Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:Cephalexin monohydrate having a crystal form that is characterized by the X-ray diffraction pattern in the table (T-type).
USE: Antibiotic with a widely-ranging antibiotic spectrum: they show strong antibiotic activity against various kinds of gram-positive and -negative bacteria. The crystal form is rod-like and scarcely hygroscopic and has high stability with time and a bulk density mostly suitable for capsule filling (usually 40g/100cc or higher).
PREPARATION: Cephalexin, which is produced synthetically or fermentatively, is dissolved in water or a mixture thereof with a hydrophilic solvent such as methanol and at least one selected from halides of alkali metal and halides of alkaline earth metals is added to the solution by more than 5W/V% to adjust the pH of the solution, preferably to 3W5, to produce the titled compound. In the present invention, the isolation of cephalexin is unncessary and the objective compound of high purity is obtained.
