Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain MBT within the range of non-knocking by detecting the failure of a knocking sensor based on its output and by preventing an excessive advance of ignition timing of engine. CONSTITUTION:Based on an electric current signal (a) to an ignition coil, an electric current (b) flows to the ignition coil. When a knocking sensor normally operates, a constant output is generated as indicated by a signal e1. When the knocking sensor failures, the output is turned into a noise signal generated only when the current is applied or when an ignition spark is generated as shown by a signal e2. When the signal e2 generated during failure is masked by pulses of ignition timing (signal d), no signal is output as indicated by a signal f2, thereby detecting the failure of the knocking sensor. With this construction, the failure of knocking sensor can be accurately detected.
