Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve discharge performance and suppress gas generation, by molding a mixture whose main constituent is powder of manganese dioxide treated to the middle between the gamma and beta types with heat, to manufacture an anode and by treating the anode with heat at high temperature. CONSTITUTION:Powder of electrolytic manganese dioxide is treated with heat at 250-430 deg.C in an electric furnace so that the manganese dioxide is changed to the middle between the gamma and beta types. The heat-treated manganese dioxide, heat- treated fibroblastic graphite and a liquid binder containing suspended fine grains of polyethylene tetrafluoride are mixed together. The mixture is molded under pressure to manufacture a disc-like anode 1. Numerous such anodes 1 are stacked with interposed separators 4 in a cassette 2 provided with a plurality of through holes 3 in the wall of the cassette. The cassette 2 is then put on a porous plate 7 supported in the internal chamber 6 of an electric furnace 5. High-humidity air 13 is heated by a heater 11 to treat the cassette 2 with heat at 370-430 deg.C. After that, dry air is introduced into the internal chamber 6 to cool the anode 1 while driving out the residual moisture.
