PURPOSE:To obtain a display element having a uniform and stable orienting property, superior resistance to environment and superior productivity by using a film formed by applying and curing a polyamic acid soln. as an orienting film. CONSTITUTION:3,3',4,4'-Biphenyltetracarboxylic acid dianhydrid or 2,3,3'4'- biphenyltetracarboxylic acid dianhydride is condensation-polymerized with an aromatic diamine such as 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether or a mixture of 4,4'-diamino diphenyl ether with other aromatic diamine such as p-phenylenediamine in an org. solvent such as N-methylpyrolidone or N,N'-dimethylacetamide to obtain a soln. of polyamic acid represented by the formula (where R is the amine-freed residue of the aromatic diamine, and n is an integer). This soln. is applied to an electrode and cured to form a film, and the film is rubbed in a fixed direction.
