Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare glyoxylic acid useful for the reaction with phenols, etc., in high selectivity even at high rate of conversion, with easy control of the reaction, without necessitating expensive facilities, by oxidizing an aqueous solution of glyoxal using chlorine as oxidizing agent.
CONSTITUTION: Chlorine gas is blasted into an aqueous solution of glyoxal, pref. a 5W40% aqueous solution, at 0W100°C, pref. 10W50°C to effect the oxidation of glyoxal. Glyoxylic acid is obtained in a selectivity of as high as ≥80% even at a high rate of conversion, i.e. ≥90%. Even if the aqueous solution of glyoxal contains a large amount of glyoxylic acid produced in the preparation process of glyoxal as a by-product, the yield of glyoxylic acid is higher than attained by conventional nitric acid oxidation. The rate of reaction can be controlled by controlling the feeding rate of chlorine.
